I just get sick of hearing this same complaint over and over again. SRT has stated its not that simple to "unlock" the computer. They don't own the rights to the software so it's not just like they can go "ok...we will open up the computer now." Legal issues and red tape etc are involved as well. Lets face it...people buy a viper because it's unique and theres nothing else like it on the road. If your liking the Viper (and the "others" you mention) is solely based on whether you can mod it or not then maybe the car is not for you. My '01 Viper is completely stock. Period. It took me almost six years of ownership before I did my first "mod" as I like to call it. A license plate frame. That was a big deal.
Some people may have bought the car to mod it but for most of us it's bad ass enough out of the box. Look at what the other OEMs have to do just to compete with it. Turbo's, superchargers, Carbon ceramic brakes. The Viper does well on it own WITHOUT all that stuff. The GEN V is a great car for the price. Period. If I could afford one new then I would have one. Vert of course. but can we please stop the I'm not gonna buy one unless stuff. #rantoff
With attitudes like that, why should any of us vendors even want to advertise here?
GM embraces the aftermarket support, sometimes using ideas developed by the aftermarket and incorporating them into their future products. GM made available the coding, cylinder heads, engine blocks, even crate engines - supplied to top GM tuner companies BEFORE the C7 Corvette became available. The end result is that the C7 has been out for 2 weeks now, and they have a plethora of parts (ported heads, cams, headers, cold air intakes, ECM tuning) already! This is what the performance enthusiasts want - the option to do as they please.
Some may call stock Vipers "bad ass". Many of us call stock Vipers.... slow. Why limit yourself, for no reason?

hey @OfficialMOPAR - when will we finally have MOPAR '13 viper goodies? It has been a year since SEMA and *nothing*
Uh, Mopar blue? Kinda looks an awful lot like it to me...
Blue Balls. Here we are all excited but it was just a tease. Time for a cold shower, lol
Well have fun watching those "Turbos, superchargers and Carbon ceramic brakes" equipped cars blow you by. In this day and age, it is easier than ever before to beat the car that has nothing but big HP thrown into it. All of those legal issues and red tape have to be resolved if they want these new cars to stay at the top for any amount of time.
Don't arm-chair preach about the Viper not being the car for me. I made a decision when I was 7 years old that I was going to own on of these cars and I'm oh so close to reaching that goal. I've learned enough in that time to know that this car isn't just about being unique. It is about being unapologetic, rude, crude and making a statement to everything else on the road. The attitude projected by this car is one that should not allow anything else on the road to beat it without some serious $$$ behind it. Then, just like the Gen II and III Vipers do today, you can throw more power under the hood as it ages to keep that attitude intact. The fact that an Gen IV Viper can be shut down on the highway by a '13 gt500 (read: MUSTANG) with a tune is embarrassing. A MUSTANG. What can the Gen IV owner do about that? Nothing.
A locked up Viper is simply not right. A Viper is not a luxury car. It is a working man's super car. It WAS the car that made aftermarket tuners salivate. Now it is just a car that people brag about putting a license plate on.

Not being able to custom tune a performance car is a legit reason for some people to refuse to upgrade. When the Gen 4 came out, my Gen 3 was already making 675 rwhp. I had zero incentive to "upgrade" to a nearly identical Gen 4, which made less power and shared the same chassis/body. So, I upgraded my hood. The Gen V was a big enough change from the 3 and 4 that I finally had incentive to buy another Viper. In every single complaint thread about the Gen 4 or 5, the custom tuning issue gets mentioned. It IS an issue to deal with, and it could hurt a few sales. If 40 more people would have bought a Viper due to modifications and tuning being available, that would be a 10% increase in sales for the current year. Every car counts.
You'd think this was a Corvette forum or something. I've never seen more negativity from a supposed "fan" site about their own beloved car! Come on guys, Chevy comes out with a nice new vette, and everyone seems to think the sky is falling! Oh well, I like the new car.....
I can picture it now...
Beth Perretta: "Ralph, Ralph, I think I just saved the Gen V slump in sales!!!"
Ralph Gilles: "Okay, let me see..."
Beth: "Look, I added a little bit of white paint into the mix of our GTS blue color and ta-da!!!"
Ralph: "Get that on Facebook ASAP with a naming contest. Sergio will be impressed!!!"

You guys are terrible!
Why are you bashing Beth or anybody else at SRT?! They're just doing the best they can... ?!
It seems like nothing they do will make some people happy.
So rude!!
Time to edit these posts..me thinks.
I understand people getting frustrated but getting personal like that is just childish!!
And the car is fantastic! ..I adore this car! It's the most beautiful vehicle I've ever seen.... It's easy & fun to drive...and fits all 5 ft of me just fine! I don't even need a pillow! LOL!
How's yours Harold?
