Resurfacing Flywheel

The service manual has a bold print admonition against machining the flywheel to restore the surface, it says replace only.
How come?

I resurfaced mine, no problems. Why would it be any different than the other gajillion cars on the road ? I would like to know what happened to Dan Cragin.

The only reason I can think of that DC might say not to re surface would be the danger of flywheel breakage.

If you cut off enough of it, it may weaken it. If it comes apart at high rpm you could be injured by pieces of it.

Some small time racers will turn down a stock flywheel for weight reduction. They cut off quite a bit of iron. This can lead to breakage.
I wouldn't think that cutting off just enough to true it up would be a problem but I guess DC does.

Stock flywheels are always on ebay and cheap too.

I did see one blow up. It was on a limited late model stock car. The car could have been running near 8k rpm at that point on the track.

It made a blue white flash of light just like a welder.
The car had a steel scatter shield so the driver wasn't hurt.

I do remember that it blew up the entire aluminum bell housing and let the back of the engine drag the track.

I believe the one I saw was probably not a modified stock wheel but it did blow.
