Those covers look great, have you compared to stock, provided you pull the carpet? Is the weight difference any greater than a couple of oz's?

They are only 'skinned' like the dash parts you see available for the Viper. aesthetics only.

If that X could be made in to an F, you could market it as Furman approved, which is sure to gain precious ET's, at Englishtown only of course.

That isn't cool unless Furman runs it.

^^^ Sounds ignorant. Everyone knows Furman. I even run his decals.

if you dont know furman, you wont know evan smith..........

Is he the driver that beat Furman in 2009?

All dyno work and ET records must be done at Englishtown for maximum results.

If I could give pos rep on this board, I would! :2tu:

It was my first attempt at laying carbon fiber so I wanted an easy part. It looks good at 5 feet but not perfect. I rushed the finishing process so there are some fine scratches in it. Plus there is a small wave in the material's pattern.

I'm also considering dash and console, door handle trim, upper part of door panel, rear bulkhead, sill plates, air box, engine cross brace and valve covers. The weight is negligent. I figure all of the above will add about 12# to the car. Not a big deal to me to get the finished look of carbon fiber without spending 4-$5,000.

Yes, I do have alot of free time and it's much cheaper than women.:)

actually, it looks good..nice job. I'd like to learn how to do it. I just started experimenting with fiber glass. I built a woofer enclosure for my boat and used fiber glass to strengthen and water proof it

here is a shot of my handy work...

So it's a (real) carbon fiber overlay of a factory part? That is really impressive for your first time doing it.

I've been doing fiberglass since the 70's and this isn't much different.

Do you have a fiberglass roller? They are a small diameter 'grooved' roller that embeds the glass into the resin and causing the resin to come to the top. If you are going to do much glass work these rollers are invaluable.

Yes it is 'real' carbon fiber material imbedded in 3 or more coats of a clear epoxy resin, then sanded, sanded, sanded, sanded and buffed to a gloss. Very time consuming process.

Some skinners spray clear lacquar over the semi-finished product. Either method is acceptable but I prefer the buffing process.

Almost all carbon fiber trim panels you see on the market are an overlaid proces and are not solid CF. Molding CF is expensive The cheaper ones use a vinyl 'decal' and put clear over it. You can see the depth when using the fabric as compared to the vinyl material. Some manufacturers are making a vinyl with a texture to it which looks pretty close to the real thing.

I've covered my radio bezel, shifter bezel and steering wheel trim. I'll post pictures when they are complete.
Peace,
Sal

I went to the hardware store bought some resin and fiber glass mat and thought I was good to go :dunno:

When I ended up with the results in the above pic...I realized I might be doing something wrong. I went on the internets and discovered the right way to do it and got the extra tools i needed. It was a ton of work to get that abortion of a fiber glass job off and start over. I think I got a good handle on it now and want to try working with carbon fiber.

PM me and I'll hook you up on the best materials and where to purchase. I researched this extensively before beginning. My next step will probably be 'bagging' the parts. I want to start selling the finished products once I get the process down pat. I'm my biggest critic and want everything as close to perfect as possible.

I'm good with the stock stereo in the Viper.

I like your idea on overlaying some of the stock parts. I'd like to do a carbon fiber overlay on my paxton air filter box and maybe a few other items.

Wow it turned out great! Let me know if you want to do your airbox. High heat applications likeunder the hood require a special resin good to 250 degrees.

this stuff is called Di-Noc FAQ | Carbon Fiber Film

I got a sample of it to play with...it's not real carbon so I don't really want it on my car, but it looks good.

A friend of mine did the roof, trunk lid and a few other pieces on his Aston Martin Vantage, looked good enough to make me think about it for a minute ;) goes on just like clear bra.

It's pricy at $15 / s.f. but looks ok. I wonder if it can be cleared for a deep flat surface. Their website doesn't really say either way.

There was a video a few weeks ago doing a complete Viper Couple. I think he ran the Texas mile with it on. That's a real testimony to the adhesion of the material.

I may try some for around the house items. I bet that sub box would look good covered or any speaker enclosure for that matter.:)

I talked to a someone that works with this stuff extensively, he tried to clear it to get a glossy look, but was not satisfied with the results. It's got a texture to it, so the paint would have to be very thin to get into grain of the material. To get it right would probably be just as much work as working with the real thing like you did.
