    RT/10 Brakes

Thanks guys, I appreciate the active "word of mouth" endorsements! Here are instructions. When you're done you've only spent $700, taken one hour, and can brake at over 1.0G with all OEM parts. How to Install My links page has a VCA thread about BBK costs and the first VCA discussion...

Water/Methanol - Does it go bad?

Don't forget the student's test was with ethanol, not methanol. Methanol would evaporate more quickly. My $0.02 would be to note the fluid level in the closed, vented container, put a paperclip or pencil in the vent, and note the fluid level. Then assume whatever evaporated was the methanol...

Water/Methanol - Does it go bad?

This seems like a good candidate for the "Questions" series.

Water/Methanol - Does it go bad?

Yes, it is true that the methanol (which has a lower boiling point and a lower latent heat of vaporization) will be "lost" more quickly. In fact, it was of such interest to some grad students, they studied the evaporation rate of various water-ethanol mixtures. A 50-50 mix became a 71-29 mix...

Hey Dave, since my features/options thread is back it shows I give better poll than you do. So don't diss the polemakers.

    Highest mileage Viper

Next month (finally) I should have a new position requiring a 100 mile round trip commute. Finally approaching 100K and looking for lots more... original engine, but on T-56 #2.

Question for Tom, F&L GoR about factory fill oil

Wish I looked liked Dustin Hoffman. Break-in is knocking the high spots off freshly machined surfaces so that the terrain looks like plateaus (instead of peaks) but retains the valleys. Retaining the valleys is critical because that gives the oil a place to hide/stay/get squished into. It is...

    '97 Performance Upgrades about $2K

Count them up - 5 of the posters in this thread have 40mm brakes already and one more keeps promising to go to Tators (where Chuck has them on his personal car) and have them put on... :)

What features/options should next Gen Viper have?

Ummm, you don't have two buttons next to the cigarette lighter? One is for the front foglights, the other is only used in Euro models for the single rear red "foglight" so in US models it doesn't do anything. My '94 RT does, so maybe it's a Gen 1 thing... This post shows I haven't lost my...

Question for Tom, F&L GoR about factory fill oil

    Thanks, flattery helps. ;)

    '97 Performance Upgrades about $2K

Technically one can go either way, but since I list the performance improvement on the graph 40mm Performance as a negative acceleration, I did say "acceleration" on purpose this time. :)

    Heat/Overheat Problem

Agree with Dan. I have a Roe duct which helps when at speed, but at slower speeds the cooling difference I saw between my original '94 fan and a replacement '98 (?) and up fan indicates that a good fan is the way to go.

Question for Tom, F&L GoR about factory fill oil

Number eleventeen in the series. Names are changed to protect the innocent. Re: Mobile One If that were true, there would be tons of Better Business Bureau complaints about false advertising, since Mobil put their logo on the oil fill cap for several years and published magazine...

Has anyone ever heard of this (brake caliper change over) ?

I think it's harder to fill a caliper that you just powdercoated (you have to be so careful because the brake fluid will soften and dull the finish) through the inlet (with a really tiny funnel?) than to bleed the brake caliper. Brake fluid is $5/quart and you would be better off replacing more...

is an aluminum flywheel worth it?

Hee, hee. I built a replica Cobra with a Dodge 340 from a Duster. I changed the stock 45lb (?) flywheel for a hogged out 12# one. Yes, the weight of the vehicle also changed about 1000# so it was really quick, but zinging the throttle in neutral was scary. Good scary.

    '97 Performance Upgrades about $2K

For the cheapest way to make the biggest change in your Viper's acceleration rate: 40mm rear brakes. The SOP dyno will have no problem feeling this one. Well inside budget, bolt on, kind of "is" stock. Also a safety and driver confidence improvement.

    Making a Viper Handle better.

I'm OK about the ball joints since I'd use the Gen 2 knuckle. I assume the collapse was in the direction of making the "A" into an "I"?

    Making a Viper Handle better.

Well, OK, but the thread was resurrected because it seemed for a while you could put the lightweight upper arm, lower arm, and steering knuckle from a Gen 2 onto a Gen 1, until I saw Mark's reply. That was kind of surprising, since I thought the upper arm was the easiest part to exchange and...

Should I stick with a Stock Thermostat?

Thanks, Dan. For my Gen 1, maybe I'll go from the heater core hose to the reservoir, since I already have a schrader valve plumbed in there.

    wheel hop????

Tire pressure can go up or down for less hop. It's changing the spring rate of the tire itself and you're looking for what the car likes. Here's how to adjust the shocks: Koni North America - ITT - Adjustment
